This post will show you the steps in profiling a Canon iPF6300 or 8300 using the ColorMunki Photo Spectrophotometer and the iPF Print Plug-In in Photoshop.

Do you have a ColorMunki? Have you recently purchased a Canon iPF printer and want to know how to profile it? This post will show you how.

Anyone that uses the ColorMunki knows it’s a great device that’s very straightforward. One concern that has come up with the device is the ability to print targets outside of the normal printer driver.

In this case, we’re talking about using the iPF Print Plug-In, which is included with every Canon iPF6300 and 8300 printer. Since the Print Plug-In is available through Photoshop and Lightroom, and since the ColorMunki cannot access the Print Plug-In through it’s own software, here is a simple workaround:

1. Open the ColorMunki software and select Profile My Printer.

2. Select Create New Profile, and select the Canon iPF6300 (or 8300). Type in the name of the product you are profiling. Click Next.

3. Load the roll you want to profile in the printer, and select Print to print the 1st Test Chart.

4. When the Print Chart dialog box appears, review the tips and click Continue.

5. Since we want to use the iPF Print Plug-In, select Adobe PDF from the printer list. This should already be installed if you are using Photoshop, but if you don’t have it you can download it free at Type in “Adobe PDF print driver” and you will be directed to the download page.

6. Print the PDF to your Desktop, then open it in Photoshop. When the Import PDF dialog box appears, do not change the Image Size. Make sure the resolution is at 300 or higher, and set the Mode to RGB. The bit depth can be at 8 or 16, depending on your workflow. Click OK to Import the PDF into Photoshop. Flatten your image using the Layers palette, and then go to File>Export>iPF6300/8300 Print Plug-In.

7. Select the Media Type for the media you are using. If you have created a custom media type, select that for the test chart (if you have not created a custom media type or you’re not familiar with it, see the video posted at the end of this post for a step-by-step tutorial). Set the Input Bit to Plug-in with the same bit depth you chose when you first Imported the PDF. Set the Print Mode to the mode you will use when printing with this profile. Set the Output Profile to None (No Color Correction). Then click Print.

8. After you have printed the 1st Test Chart, allow it to completely dry and go back to your ColorMunki software to measure it. Follow the on-screen instructions or watch the video instructions.

9. When you have finished measuring, click Next. The software will generate the 2nd Test Chart.

10. When you reach the Print 2nd Test Chart screen, repeat the steps above to complete the profile.
